YouTube started testing Picture-in-Picture (PiP) support when viewing content, for iOS and iPadOS Premium users in the US last year. After testing and experiments, the company has finally rolled out the YouTube Picture-in-Picture support globally for premium users. This feature is already available for Android users.

How to use YouTube Picture-in-Picture support for iPhone?
To turn on the feature, in the YouTube app, go to Settings > General and turn on Picture-in-picture. If you don’t turn on PiP, you’ll still be able to use background play by default.
With Picture-in-Picture (PiP), you can watch YouTube videos in a small mini player while simultaneously browsing other apps on your mobile device. The PiP window can be dragged to different parts of the screen, allowing playback to continue on top of other apps. You can pause or stop playing a video before you exit YouTube to prevent PiP from turning on.

Availability of YouTube Picture-in-Picture support for iPhone?
Picture-in-Picture (PiP) is now rolling out to iPhone and iPad devices (running iOS and iPadOS 15.0 or higher) over the next several days. This has been a slow rollout for a highly requested feature.
In the U.S., everyone using the YouTube app on iPhones and iPad can use the PiP feature for non-music content. Globally, you need a Premium subscription to use it on iPhones and iPad, just like Android.
- Non-Premium Members: In the U.S., everyone using the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad will have access to PiP for non-music content. If you use an Android device you already have this feature and will continue to!
- Premium Members: Globally, all Premium members on iPhones and iPad will have access to PiP for all content, (both music and non-music).
