Atrangi Re is an Indian Hindi-language musical romantic drama film directed by Aanand L. Rai. Produced by T-Series, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films, the film stars Akshay Kumar, Dhanush, and Sara Ali Khan. The Tamil dubbed version of the film is titled Galatta Kalyanam. The music is composed by A R Rahman. The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 24 December 2021 in Hindi and Tamil languages.

Storyline

The film (Atrangi Re) opens with Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) being chased by family goons while she is fleeing to Kashi (Varanasi) railway station. Vishu (Dhanush) and his friend MS (Ashish Verma) deboard the train and see a fierce Rinku hurling bottles at the men. She is brought home and beaten by her maternal grandmother (Seema Biswas).

Rinku reveals she is failing to elope with her boyfriend since age of 14. Her grandmother requests her maternal uncle (Pankaj Jha) to marry her off to any suitable bachelor irrespective of his domicile. While on his work onsite in Kashi, Vishu repairs lines telephone poles though his profession is that of a graduating surgeon. While preparations for Rinku’s wedding, she is drugged to partial consciousness. Meanwhile, the family goons kidnap and bring Vishu as the groom.

The family goons discuss they were to kidnap MS but made a mistake. They put him to partial consciousness by administering dinitrogen monoxide. Vishu and Rinku and forcibly married. They are off to Delhi where Vishu reveals he will be engaged in two days whereas Rinku also disapproves of this marriage. She shows the photo of her boyfriend Sajjad (Akshay Kumar) published in a piece newspaper whom she wants to meet in Delhi. Through the track “Tere Rang” it is shown how Sajjad was a versatile performing artist and a visualized romance between Rinku with Sajjad.

Sajjad was in South Africa and would reach in 10 days while Rinku and Vishu reach Delhi. In the hostel, Vishu discussed his concerns of confronting his fiancé, Mandy (Dimple Hayathi). Rinku, Vishu and his friends reach Madurai for the engagement. While Rinku is performing at the function (track “Chaka Chak”), Mandy’s bridemates show her a trending video that plays Rinku and Vishu being forcibly married in Kashi by abducting groom (Vishu).

The engagement is called off where Vishu clarifies that the marriage was forced but Rinku was now officially his wife. They return to Delhi, where a heartbroken Vishu develops feelings for Rinku but she says Sajjad has returned. A scene shows Rinku rushing to Sajjad to arrive on the elephant. Vishu insists MS help Sajjad and Rinku to return well and let her know Vishu’s fine. MS meets Rinku to understand that Sajjad is imaginary and Rinku is psychologically unwell.

Vishu rushes to bring back Rinku citing that they need to divorce before she elopes with Sajjad. MS discussed with Vishu, the moment you create guilt, the imaginary character of Sajjad should drift off from Rinku’s mind. They make several attempts from role plays, dosing her medications to making her fall in love with Vishu (song “Little Little”).

By now, Vishu was in love with Rinku, however, Rinku is skeptical with Sajjad now. His labour of love, Vishu breaks bottles on his head and admitted. Rinku says in return of his favors, Sajjad will vanish the Taj Mahal. Rinku, Vishu and MS are off to Agra, they convince the crowd to fake the play knowing Sajjad is imaginary and only living Rinku’s head. After they return, Rinku plays subconsciously imaginary that Sajjad is dying.

The graduating surgeons, MS and Vishu take Sajjad to operation theatre. They have chance to let Rinku know that Sajjad died but Vishu disagrees to let Rinku believe it (song “Tumse Mohabbat Hai”). Next day while filing a divorce with Rinku, Rinku states that she wants a lover (Sajjad) and husband (Vishu) in her life. Vishu prepares to drops Rinku at the railway station so that she meets Sajjad. Sajjad enacts that Rinku has found her soulmate and she must go to him.

In a flashback, the scenes shown through the song “Tere Rang” are repeated that portray how Rinku’s mother (also Sara Ali Khan) and her father (also Akshay Kumar) due to their religions, the couple was not allowed to marry. They have a child out of wedlock (Mannat Mishra) who keeps up with Rinku’s mother to meet her father at the magic shows at the theatre. In one such plays of firewalking, Rinku’s grandmother and sons replace the fuel to an igniting one that leads Sajjad to immolate.

Meanwhile, Rinku’s mother and daughter are the audience, the former realizes he is dying due to immolation. Rinku’s mother jumps to the firewalk path to thereby immolating with Sajjad. Young Rinku feels happy sensing it is a magical play only to realize later that her parents have died in this tragedy. This shapes up her paracosm with Sajjad until adult.

The film returns to the original screenplay, Rinku rushes back from the railway platform only to see Vishu distributing sweets to stationed passengers his wife has returned. The film closes (song “Garda”) with Sajjad performing.
