Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film is directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. In the film, Strange and his allies travel into the multiverse to protect a young girl from Wanda Maximoff, who has gone rogue and will stop at nothing to reunite with her own sons at all costs.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Storyline

A variant of Doctor Stephen Strange is seen running with a girl from a magical creature in the space between universes. This version of Strange dies while helping the girl. In another universe, Stephen Strange attends his ex-fiancée Christine Palmer’s wedding. An interdimensional octopus attacks the city. When Strange is overpowered, Wong joins the fight.

The two eventually kill the creature while saving the girl, who introduces herself as America Chavez. Chavez explains she has the ability to travel through the multiverse and those other creatures are after her power. Chavez takes Strange and Wong to the dead Strange’s body and they deduce that the enemy uses witchcraft.

Strange meets with Wanda Maximoff, who has already been corrupted by the Darkhold and turned into the Scarlet Witch. After Strange tells Maximoff about Chavez, she reveals that she was the one controlling the creatures. She intends to take Chavez’s power to be with her children Billy and Tommy whom she created during her time in Westview.

Strange refuses to give her to Maximoff, so she attacks Kamar-Taj. During the attack, Chavez’s powers are triggered and she and Strange escape in a portal, leaving Wong behind in Maximoff’s captivity. Maximoff begins to conduct a Darkhold spell known as “dream walking”, to find and control the body of a version of Wanda Maximoff in the universe where Strange and Chavez escaped into.

Strange and Chavez end up in an alternate universe, designated as “Earth-838”, where they are arrested by this universe’s Mordo. Strange meets this universe’s Palmer who designates his universe as “Earth-616”. Mordo takes Strange to the Illuminati, consisting of Mordo, Peggy Carter, Black Bolt, Maria Rambeau, Reed Richards, and Charles Xavier. They explain how Strange turned to the Darkhold in his efforts to defeat their Thanos, and had to be killed, concluding that Strange is the greatest threat to the multiverse.

Scarlet Witch arrives and attacks the Illuminati, killing Black Bolt, Richards, Carter, Rambeau, and Xavier. Strange, Chavez, and Palmer escape into the space between universes, where they go after the Book of Vishanti, intending to use it to defeat the Scarlet Witch. However, she catches up and attacks Chavez. Scarlet Witch controls Chavez to open another portal and throws Strange and Palmer into it. She then takes Chavez back to the main universe as a prisoner and begins a spell to take her powers.

Strange and Palmer enter an almost destroyed universe where they meet another Strange who is revealed to be corrupted by the Darkhold. Strange kills this universe’s Strange and takes his Darkhold to dream walk into the dead Strange’s body from earlier and go after Maximoff. Scarlet Witch defeats Wong and Strange but is briefly fought back by Chavez.

Realizing that she cannot defeat the Scarlet Witch, she instead fulfills her wish and brings her to Earth-838 to be with her children. The children see her as a monster and run towards their mother. She finally snaps out of her delusions and makes amends by destroying the book in every universe. She also destroys the Tomb of the Damned, which falls on top of her, leaving her fate unknown.

Strange, Chavez, and Wong return to their Earth and Palmer returns to her universe. Chavez begins training at Kamar-Taj. Sometime later, Strange develops the third eye and is approached by a sorcerer who invites him into the dark dimension to avert the incursion he caused.
